I’m attending the Media Post Email Insider Summit in Deer Valley, Utah this week. I got a scholarship to attend through a group that I’m part of called Women of Email. (If you’re a woman working in email, it’s the place to be) It’s been a very great few days. The conferences takes place at this beautiful resort called Stein Eriksen Lodge. I had the chance to speak on a panel about personalization in email. I think one of the things that this conference reaffirms for me is how having a tribe is necessary.
I’ve been reminded of that in lots of ways lately. You know like little breadcrumbs sprinkled here and there to make me remember that there’s power in being around people who just get you. On the latest episode of my podcast, The Unshrew Show, I talk more about the reasons we all need a tribe.
Understanding
Working in digital marketing, it’s difficult sometimes to feel understood or known. I’d relate it to any space: nurses get each other in a way that people who aren’t nurses don’t. I have never underestimated the power that comes with having a tribe of folks that do what I do. I’m in Facebook Groups where I connect with other professionals and they are some of the most valuable internet places for me.
Commiserate
There are some unique challenges that come along with every occupation. Here at EIS, it has been comforting to see that many marketers have the same data, technology, content and communication challenges that I do. One panel here talked about their biggest mess ups. It’s stressful sending email communication out and mistakes happen. I’ve definitely made a few myself!
Celebrate
It’s easier to identify and understand victories. We have so many shared and overlapping experiences.
Support
Most importantly, I appreciate the support that comes from getting together with a group of peers. There’s nothing like it. I sometimes forget just how much I need that support in order to feel a sense of reassurance like I’m not just pulling best practices or valuable advice out of the air. That’s what it feels like sometimes when I try to guide groups in the right direction when sending out messaging, setting goals or interpreting analytics.
I’m saying all of this to say: find your tribe. You need it.
