It all started out with me getting ready to wash my hair. Frustrated with my bottomless box of products, I decided to go through and pull out every single hair product in my possession. I wanted to get things more organized and take an inventory. For me, the best way to get over impulse purchases was to have a good understanding of what I do have.

A little bit of background on my hair:

– I went natural in 2010. I didn’t do a big chop, but instead I went to a stylist who helped me grow my hair out and trim it accordingly.

– I don’t know my “number” or anything.

– My hair is fine, scalp is dry…very dry sometimes

– Some products I bought work now, but didn’t work when my hair was both natural and permed.

When it came to getting organized, I started by pulling everything out and placing it all on the counter.

Next, I used post-its to write down categories and sub categories for sorting:

I love these D Post-its!

Shampoo – Dry Scalp/Clarifying, Moisturizing

Conditioner – Leave Ins, Masks

Styling – Oils, Heat Protectants, Hair Sprays, Scalp remedies

After that, I sorted everything and then threw out a few items that I would never use and couldn’t give away (a sample of weave bonding remover – I don’t know anyone who uses weave bond.) I also found some baby shampoo which I use whenever I get pink eye, but I don’t use it on my hair.

All of the sorted items.

I’ve been a Birchbox subscriber for over a year now. While sorting the products I realized that I have a good amount of samples that I need to test out, give away or throw out. I also have some other freebies throughout my product collection that I need to make good use of. I put everything in boxes and into the cabinet. For some of the duplicate products, I spread the items between my room, car, trunk or office desk where needed. I don’t keep hair products in the shower, I pick them out before I wash and put them back when I’m done. Now that everything is sorted and I pulled all of the products out I know what I DO have and that I don’t need anything else. I hope to throw out things as I finish them and replace the products that I like.

I feel relieved to have everything sorted out and in a set place! So worth taking the time to do. Have you done a product inventory before? I promise, you won’t regret it!
